Michael Godard considers himself more than just an artist—he’s also a storyteller. The Las Vegas native remembers, as a youth, being given a pack of crayons and not putting them down the entire day. “Those are the stories around the Christmas table,” Godard said with a laugh. “I took an interest in watercolors and drawing before I could walk.” It’s that unquenchable creativity that led Godard to pursue the world of art after 12 years as a mechanical engineer. He studied art at UNLV, and championed his work at art shows, proving his mantra “doors will open if you’re willing to work hard.” Case in point: his “Oh My Godard” gallery (702-699-9099) calls the Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood home, his artwork hangs in casinos, doctor’s offices and horse tracks, and his “Rockin’ Olives” slot machines are a hit worldwide. “People inspire me, their lives inspire me,” said Godard. “It can be in an emotional kind of way or spiritual kind of way. It’s kind of like enjoying a scary movie—you don’t really want to be chased around by a maniac, but for a few minutes you can lose yourself and say ‘well, what if’ and use your imagination.” When he first started painting, Godard was living in California with his mother, after his parents split. His first topic: Gambling. “The art critics are very harsh, and said ‘there’s no casinos here, what are you thinking?’ Then, of course, later on (after I had moved back to Vegas), the Indian casinos were popping up everywhere. Now I was a visionary (laughs). I was just painting what I had loved. Art is like acting, there’s a lot of rejection. I paint for my own enjoyment rather than trying to think of what would be popular.” Today, however, Godard’s “Rockin’ Olives” slots are the most popular thing the gaming world has seen—they’re currently featured in 600 casinos in the United States, and are set to go international. Godard himself worked out the details of the theme and game play (relying once again on his love of math), and attends every debut, all for the love of the art. “Dream and dream big,” said Godard. “I never thought that I’d be able to make a living out of painting—I just knew that that’s what I wanted to do. You can do anything you want to in life if you love it.”

  2. Godard, who hand-painted every image used as artwork in this game, used his famous olive characters as the theme for the slot. The game itself is a five-reel, 25-line video slot designed for penny and 2-cent denominations. The minimum bet to activate all the game’s features is 25 credits plus a 10-credit ante wager. The olive, of course, is wild.
